Collaboration: supporting young people into work

Our aim is to give young people the information and support they need to turn their qualifications into success as adults.

Why this is an issue:

The proportion of disadvantaged pupils in education, employment or training between October and March after key stage 4 is below the national average.

The percentage of young people who are qualified to level 2 (GCSE or equivalent) in English and Maths by the age of 19 is very low, especially for disadvantaged young people. Very few young people go to university and the percentages from seven particular wards going on to higher education are in the bottom 20% of all wards nationally.

Schools report that is difficult to establish and maintain relationships with local employers to offer work experience. There are many high value employers in Norwich who are enthusiastic about supporting young people but they tell us it is not clear how they can help.

Disadvantaged young people are the most likely to experience dips in attainment when moving between different phases of education. There is a large population of children who regularly move between schools. The most disadvantaged young people can find the move from school to college particularly difficult if they are not able to access support to overcome challenges and set-backs.

Secondary school students

  • Ensure The Careers and Enterprise Company, The Network for East Anglian Collaborative Outreach and The National Citizen Service work together in all secondary schools to support young people in making choices about their education and career options after year 11.
  • Ensure all secondary school pupils in 2017 to 2018 have 4 high-quality work experiences, through the support of an Enterprise Adviser, with over 11,000 experiences taking place overall.
  • Create a network of Careers Facilitators in secondary schools to support Careers Leaders to achieve all 8 Gatsby benchmarks.  The network will demonstrate what outstanding careers and enterprise provision looks like, with a focus on disadvantaged pupils.  See more information about their regular workshops here.
  • Support secondary schools and colleges to work with Norfolk Young Chamber to maximise opportunities to engage with local businesses. 
  • Provide mentoring for young people who are most at risk of disengaging from education.   Local mentors trained by Volunteering Matters will focus on supporting pupils and their families around success at school and understanding information about career options.
  • Create an alumni scheme focused around young people with SEND to showcase local individuals who are successful despite apparent barriers and inspire pupils about the range of future pathways available to them. 
  • Improve information sharing between secondary schools and colleges in Norwich to best support young people that didn’t achieve a Level 2 in English and/or Maths to quickly gain their qualification.

Primary school students

Can you help us? 

We are looking for people from all backgrounds and careers to volunteer their time to support our work.  Projects rely on support from employers and individuals who can provide schools with input, inspiration and real-world experience to contribute to their careers and enterprise programmes.

This could be on a personal level as an individual, or support from a local employer who could support these initiatives across their organisation.  

What are we aiming to achieve by 2021?

More Year 11 student leavers who were eligible for pupil premium will move into sustained work or education.

More young people will go onto Higher Education or a Higher Level Apprenticeship.

More Year 13 students leavers who were eligible for pupil premium at school will move from a Level 3 qualification into sustained work or further or higher education.
